Roles & Responsibilities

The Director of Educational Services will oversee all educational aspects of the unaccompanied child’s stay to include intake assessments, classroom learning, exams, educational advancement, and more. The Director will choose and adapt intake assessments and local curricula to meet the needs of each child. The safety and security of each child to include their physical and mental health will be the top priority of the Director of Educational Services while the children are in the classroom or tutoring setting.  The following are the core responsibilities of the Director of Educational Services.  
  • Generate, monitor, and organize the administration of an educational assessment within 72-hours of a child’s admission into the facility 
  • Develop and implement an ESL curriculum (and assessments) for children ages 13-17 
  • Utilize learning materials and assessments that are culturally relevant, appropriate, and sensitive.  
  • Create a classification and organizational structure for children’s education based educational assessment results in the areas of academic development, level of literacy, and linguistic ability. Use sound judgement with safety as a top priority when establishing classroom structures specially as it regards to age and sex. 
  • Make every effort possible to provide comprehensive services and literature in the native language of each unaccompanied alien child. 
  • Adapt or modify local educational curricula and assessments in the following areas: Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, Writing, Physical Education, and English as a Second Language (ESL), if applicable 
  • Generate, monitor, and organize the administration of 6 hours of structured education in the fore mentioned areas Monday-Friday throughout the entire year for all ages and learning levels.  
  • Ensures consistent and effective implementation of high-impact instructional practices 
  • Executes operations that ensure minimal disruptions to teaching and learning and promotes the success of all students and staff 
  • Provide opportunities for and keep adequate records of educational advancements such as independent study, special projects, pre-GED classes and college preparatory tutorials and more.  
  • Provide, monitor, and organize tutoring sessions as needed by each child.  
  • Ensure there are no academic breaks over two-weeks.  
  • Offer and monitor vocational training and learning opportunities to supplement, not replace, classroom study.  
  • Utilize available community partnership opportunities for learning and development.  
  • Ensure robust and clear monitoring and evaluation of students at all educational levels and ages.  
  • Ensures that all students are learning, and we continually address any and all gaps in achievement between subgroups. 
  • Uses multiple sources of data to develop a plan for the ongoing improvement of student achievement. 
  • Be familiar with, abide by, trauma informed care in any learning environment.  
    • Ensure educational staff: 
    • Are competent, culturally sensitive, and prepared for each session  
    • Utilize trauma informed care in the classroom environment 
    • Are progressing through curricula appropriately  
    • Evaluated and provided feedback at regular intervals 
    • Prioritize the safety and security of each child including their mental and physical health 

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience  (management preferred) at a youth care provider facility, elementary/high school/or middle school, correctional facility, or related experience 
  • Experience teaching ESL or managing an ESL program  
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) 
  • Demonstrated academic results and leadership experience  
  • Demonstrated leadership experience 
  • A completed FBI fingerprint check of national and state criminal history repositories 
  • A completed Clean Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) Check 
  • Ability to receive a child protective services background check with the State(s) of U.S. residence for the last five years 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Health or Human Services, Social Services, or related field 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience in core subjects (ESL, Math, etc.) 
  • Experience developing, following, and monitoring individualized services plans for children of all ages and backgrounds.  
  • Familiarity with both Federal HHS and State of Maryland Dept of Human Services regulations 
  • Familiarity with federal contracting 
  • Experience working with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) either as a contractor, civilian, or as a grantee 
  • Experience managing either an Emergency Intake Shelter (EIS) or an Influx Care Facility (ICF) 
  • Possess First Aid Certification
