Roles & Responsibilities

Computer Forensic Scientist will support the program by working within several theater operational projects that directly support the Cyber Forensic mission of the program and by performing as a Computer Forensic Subject Matter Expert. The Computer Forensics Scientist requires a high level of competency in the computer science and information security fields. Must have a solid understanding of modern forensic methods. Must have a firm grasp of current requirements for the introduction of scientific results into U.S. legal proceedings. This position will conduct computer forensic examinations for a Department of Defense (DoD) agency. The successful candidate will work with contractor personnel, U.S. Government (USG) special agents, military personnel, attorneys, and others as they investigate computer related incidents directed against the USG and DoD or as they support other USG and DoD activities. Conduct computer forensic examinations using in-house processes and modern forensic tools. Conduct validation testing of digital forensic tools. Maintain evidentiary chain-of- custody and perform digital data acquisition of a wide variety of digital mediums. Research and document new cyber forensic technologies, techniques, and procedures. Maintain awareness of technology platforms that can be used for malicious or hostile actions directed against the USG or DoD. Document examination results and findings, assisting in the overall investigation of an incident, and testify in legal or administrative proceedings as needed.  Must be able to conduct forensic exams of computers, servers, and portable electronic devices. Must be competent in searching for information that may have been deleted, hidden or lost in large datasets. Work within existing cyber forensics laboratory with small team. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience with a wide variety of computer operating systems and network environments including Windows, OS X, and Linux.  Must understand general information systems security, network architectures, database concepts, e-mail systems, Office, common intrusion tools and techniques, and commercial off-the-shelf computer forensic tools. A solid understanding and experience with Windows Forensic Examinations using the EnCase forensic platform is required.  Must possess the ability to write reports of findings for potential use in legal and administrative proceedings and to verbally explain findings to less-experienced non-technical persons.  Excellent analytical skills and be able to multi-task efficiently. Ability to work independently as well as with small group.

Basic Qualifications

Security Clearance. Top Secret with SCI Access

 

Demonstrated understanding of computer network penetration testing and techniques; computer evidence seizure, computer forensic analysis, and data recovery; computer intrusion analysis and incident response, intrusion detection; computer network surveillance/monitoring; network protocols, network devices, multiple operating systems, and secure architectures. The Computer Forensic Scientist must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing to include IIRs, must possess a strong working knowledge of all Microsoft applications (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access), and must be able to work as a member of a team.

 

Category 1 Computer Forensic Scientist Minimum Requirements. Master’s degree in a related field and 3 years of specialized experience in computer forensics; OR Bachelor's degree in a related field and 6 years of specialized experience in computer forensics; OR 10 years of computer forensics experience.
