About the Role

 

Culmen is seeking a Laboratory Coordinator to provide clinical and laboratory support for the NAMRU EURAFCENT Science program at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, under the auspices of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM). This position will involve facilitating research activities between the medical staff at the Expeditionary Medical Facility and the NAMRU-EURAFCENT laboratory located on-site. This is a full-time, on-site role based at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.

What You’ll Do in Your New Role

 

 

  1. Procedure Implementation and Documentation:

    • Maintain, document, and follow procedures based on guidance from NAMRU-EURAFCENT Principal Investigators (PIs).
    • Implement a unified process for collecting data and samples from human and non-human subjects, adhering to Institutional Review Board regulations and approved study protocols.
  2. Collaboration and Coordination:

    • Collaborate with various agencies at Camp Lemonnier and the Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa to support research studies.
    • Liaise between medical personnel at the Expeditionary Medical Facility and the NAMRU-EURAFCENT laboratory.
    • Monitor data reporting logs and follow up with the Expeditionary Medical Facility Clinic to ensure the timely sharing of samples with the NAMRU Laboratory.
    • Secure local approvals for research projects.
  3. Sample and Data Management:

    • Collect a variety of biological samples, including bodily fluids and tissue specimens, as part of research protocols.
    • Ensure all enrollment forms and clinical specimens are properly labeled and documented.
    • Perform required laboratory tests according to study protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
    • Maintain study files securely and prepare backup copies of all data daily
    • Assist in maintaining the confidentiality of all study information.
  4. Quality Control and Reporting:

    • Implement and maintain an effective quality control system to ensure services are performed according to standards.
    • Prepare and maintain temperature logs for refrigerators, freezers, and incubators.
    • Prepare weekly and monthly reports documenting the status and results of research projects.
  5. Inventory and Logistics:

    • Maintain updated inventory and maintenance records for all supplies and equipment.
    • Ensure sufficient supplies are available for a three-to-six-month period.
    • Track and coordinate the shipping of equipment, supplies, and reagents to and from Camp Lemonnier.
    • Follow up on purchase orders and manage the receipt, movement, and storage of supplies.
  6. Additional Duties:

    • Receive and store vector samples from the Djiboutian Ministry of Health and the Expeditionary Medical Facility.
    • Safeguard all biological samples and ensure they are properly secured.
    • Perform other duties as needed per current or new protocols.

Required Qualifications

 

  1. Ability to work at CLDJ (Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti).
  2. Ability to prepare and write regular reports.
  3. Good communication and organizational skills.
  4. Fluency in English.
  5. Minimum master’s degree in molecular biology or laboratory science.
  6. More than 5 years’ experience in:
    • Conduct research and surveillance studies.
    • Perform Clinical Laboratory techniques and procedures.
    • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment .
    • Manage a clinical laboratory, including overseeing and conducting required tests.
    • Collect various biological samples, including blood, urine, biopsies, etc. 
    • Working with the US Department of Defense.
