About the Role

Culmen International is seeking an experienced Bioinformatics Technician to support Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Europe and Middle East infectious disease research and surveillance activities throughout the United States European Command (EUCOM) and United States Central Command (CENTCOM) AOR to include Bulgaria, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Romania, and Georgia with the intent to expand the EME footprint to other Eastern European and Levant countries of interest as mission dictates (e.g., Jordan, Israel, Kuwait, Ukraine, and Moldova).

 

What You’ll Do in Your New Role

The Bioinformatics Technician shall provide laboratory and scientific support for the Europe-Middle East (EME) branch, to perform next generation sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics (BI) support using computational and analytical tools, comprising the ability to construct analysis pipelines for genomics data, and to integrate with in-house databases. A strong background in BI is desirable.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain Public Trust/NACI clearance
  • Professional/Educational: The position requires a Ph.D. in biomedical science/bioinformatics/math/computer related field with a minimum of 2 years’ experience
  • Knowledge and some proficiency with Python, Perl, Shell, R, MATLAB, and/or JAVA are preferable. Demonstrate experience in the areas of NGS data analysis and the ability to build analytical workflows and tools for automated deployment of bioinformatics analytical pipeline for interpreting NGS data., and use open-source tools to develop, refine, and troubleshoot analytical pipelines code. Adept at analyzing sequencing data from both Oxford Nanopore Technologies and Illumina systems, including BLAST searching and contig assembly of resulting data
  • Demonstrate experience working with a Linux environment and have familiarity with scripting and programming language for implementing computational models and algorithms. Demonstrated ability to prepare technical reports and train team members on BI SOPs, and analytical workflows. Able to provide guidance/support/troubleshooting to ensure SOPs/workflows are followed, tracked, and documented by supporting personnel
  • Ability to communicate and work with laboratory scientists without a BI background to develop BI strategies for sequencing projects desirable
  • Language: Demonstrated English language proficiency in Level B2 English required. Demonstrated proficiency to write and review manuscripts published in international journals, take oral/written instructions, keep records, and discuss procedures in English. Native speaker or demonstrated language proficiency as Level B2 in language of primary country of operation (e.g., Georgia, Bulgaria, Poland,
    Latvia, etc.) required
