About the Role

Culmen International is hiring a Study Physician who will serve as the Deputy Head of the WRAIR AFRIMS Laboratory in Manila, Philippines.

 

Culmen International is providing support for clinical site management and in-country clinical research operations and scientific laboratory support for surveillance, epidemiology, and intervention studies, sample collection, and laboratory testing in field sites located across Southeast Asia in coordination with the offices and personnel in Bangkok, Thailand.

 

The Study Physician will provide the necessary qualified scientific, technical, and administrative personnel to support research, administration, project management, and logistics for viral disease, bacterial, and parasitic disease research. 

What You’ll Do in Your New Role

Regulatory and Compliance:

  • Manage regulatory documents and prepare study files for inspections and audits.
  • Ensure that studies are conducted in accordance with approved protocols, institutional regulatory requirements, SOPs, SSPs, GCP guidelines, sponsor guidelines, and other regulatory requirements as applicable.
  • Serve as liaison between AFRIMS and collaborators, sponsors, auditors, and the ethical review committee.
  • Comply with quality assurance/quality control guidance from the Department’s Quality Control Unit and authorized internal/external auditors.

Study Management:

  • Assist Clinical Investigators in planning and execution of research studies.
  • Prepare study documents that serve as source documents for the study.
  • Screen subjects for eligibility to participate in research protocols, enroll subjects, and obtain informed consent.
  • Assist Clinical Investigators in performing study and other procedures as required.
  • Schedule and perform follow-up visits with study subjects.
  • Check and review data for any discrepancies recorded on CRFs and electronic CRFs.
  • Ensure quality data entry to perform accurate statistical analysis for data distribution and publication.
  • Prepare periodic study reports and presentations as required by the Chief, Department of Virology.

Personnel Management:

  • Supervises and supports the training and development of personnel involved in the study.
  • Ensures effective communication and coordination among team members to achieve project goals.
  • Acts as a mentor to junior staff and provides guidance on best practices and procedures.

Technology and IT Support:

  • Coordinate and support the development of technology solutions and mapping of the overall IT for research projects of PAVRU and the AFRIMS Department of Virology.
  • Assist database management staff with any computer-related concerns.

Vendor and Procurement Management:

  • Coordinate the acquisition, shipment, and distribution of supplies and equipment needed on-site as needed.

Health and Safety:

  • Serve as Occupational Health and Safety Officer, carrying out OHS programs to ensure the health and safety of all PAVRU Manila staff.
  • Adhere to all AFRIMS or Department policies.

Required Qualifications

  • MD or PhD in a relevant field such as medicine, public health, virology, microbiology, or related biomedical sciences.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in clinical or laboratory-based research, public health programs, or related scientific settings.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and regulatory compliance in clinical trials or observational studies.

  • Proven experience in study coordination, subject enrollment, and regulatory documentation for research protocols.

  • Experience in supervising or mentoring research or clinical staff.

  • Strong understanding of quality assurance/quality control practices in clinical or laboratory environments.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with electronic data capture systems (e.g., REDCap, OpenClinica).

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and work independently in a dynamic research environment.

  • Willingness to travel to field sites within the Philippines as required.

  • Commitment to upholding occupational health and safety standards and promoting a safe work environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with or coordinating activities involving the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) or other government/military health institutions.

  • Familiarity with AFRIMS protocols and procedures.

  • Experience supporting multi-site or international research projects.

  • Working knowledge of IRB processes and research ethics in the Philippines.

  • Ability to contribute to scientific reports, presentations, or publications.
